Niccolò Ammaniti
Fango (Mud)
A short story collection, Mondadori 1996 - Einaudi Stile Libero 2014, 364 pages

L’ultimo capodanno dell’umanità, included in this book, was made into a film by Marco Risi in 1998.

“A fearsomely gifted writer.”
The Independent

“A master storyteller.”
The Guardian

From the festive apocalypse of L’ultimo capodanno dell’umanità to the little Albertino, protagonist of Mud, Niccolò Ammaniti’s stories set the scene with the new heroes of a borderline and metropolitan humanity, capable of passing from modest aspiration to a bloody crime. These stories mix all genres, from horror to Italian-style comedy, ultimately striking a genuinely common element in a grotesque comic vein. They are stories in which a minute observation of reality blends with an uncontainable imagination, so that even death is transformed into a glittering spectacle. Tremendous bravura and a superb sense of rhythm make up the rest, giving this book the aspect of an authentic, inimitable jewel.
