Elvira Mujčić was born in 1980 in Loznica on the border between Serbia and Bosnia by pure chance while her mother was traveling. She lived in Srebrenica until 1992 when the war in Bosnia and Herzegovina began and her family became refugees, first in Croatia and then in Italy, where she settled permanently. Naturalized as an Italian citizen, she graduated with a degree in Foreign Languages and Literature and is now a writer and literary translator. The experience of war, uprooting, not belonging, and the existential balancing act between cultures and languages characterizes Mujčić's novels, in particular: La lingua di Ana (Infinito ed., 2012), Dieci prugneai fascisti (Elliot, 2016), Consigli per essere un bravo immigrato (Elliot, 2019), Da grande voglio imitare Giano in the magazine “Sotto il Vulcano” and La buona condotta (Crocetti, 2023). She chose to write in Italian, defining it as a refuge and recognizing in the inevitable lost in translation the possibility of reinventing herself. She participated in the latest edition of “Letterature: Festival Internazionale” in Rome with the story Un luogo sicuro (A Safe Place) dedicated to the thirtieth anniversary of the Srebrenica genocide.

She is one of the authors of the Italian-German anthology project Zeitworte/Parole del tempo, to be published in early 2026 by Alphabeta edizioni.

She has translated well-known authors from the former Yugoslavia such as Slavenka Drakulić, Faruk Šehić, and Robert Perišić. She hosts “Pagina 3 Internazionale” on Rai Radio3. She is a translation mentor for the CELA (Connecting Emerging Literary Artists) project at the Scuola Holden.
Her most recent novel is La stagione che non c'era (Guanda, 2025).
