The Art of Doubt
A privileged look at the writer’s workshop.
Years ago, when it was first published under another title, this book was different. Gianrico Carofiglio, who back then was still just a magistrate and hadn’t started his writing career, had conceived it as a manual on the interrogation technique, on how to demolish or strengthen a testimony in criminal proceedings. But since the text was all built on concrete cases, on the verbal of real interrogations, it had a wider circle of readers, beyond specialists. Apparently many had found an unexpected and surprising reading pleasure in that book. In the subtle art of insinuating doubt they had perceived humor.
We find the spirit of literature in a collection of veristic stories: pieces of life, tragic and comic stories of human beings taken in adventures and misadventures, of prey and predators.
There are very few documents that allow us to enter a writer’s workshop, observe him while he finds his personal key, his inspiration, discover him while he sharpens his visionary and fantastic weapons. This is one of those documents. Carofiglio discovered the literary charm of the Italian trial, that potential of tragedy and comedy, then implemented it in the novels of the lawyer Guido Guerrieri. With their unmistakable ability to look at reality shattered by the only possible lens: stories, which in fact – observes Guerrieri – “are all we have”.
