The Rabbit's Nostril
‘An amusing master of suspicion, Paola Mastrocola warns against the wrong ideas that claim to be the most correct, against the ever new conventionalisms.’ Lorenzo Mondo, La Stampa ‘Our only writer capable of delightfully engaging comedy.’ Giulia Borgese, Corriere della Sera Barbara Lope is a woman in the prime of life, she has attractive blonde fringes, elegant clothes, a good job. Yet every now and then she feels like a burden, an acute annoyance: at school it was the conceited classmate, at work the careerist colleague, and then the high-heeled shoes, the social evenings, the official speeches, the ceremonies, the weddings... And when situations become unbearable, when it seems to her that people and places have lost the sense of what they really are (if they ever possessed it), something snaps in Barbara, a small movement, a minimal gesture, of impatience... Cheeky? Playful? Provocative? One cannot say. Certainly it is an irresistible impulse, and Barbara cannot hold it back. It is her way of reacting to absurdities, to distortions. Perhaps the desire to find someone who resembles her. In short, she makes that gesture, and suddenly what seemed so serious and important loses consistency, becomes air, dissolves.
