From mother to daughter
What isolates you saves you, it is life that puts you in danger.
Marilu lives on top of an island: below is the village, in the middle is the forest, and finally the clearing with her house, where even the frequent summer fires cannot reach her. She is a woman who fascinates but somewhat frightens, because she carries with her the fact that she was very free in the freest years of the last century, the psychedelic 1970s. Far too much, thinks her daughter Angela, who feels she has received only neglect. Now Angela reluctantly finds herself forced to entrust her daughter Adelaide - who goes by the name Adè - to her for three months, a teenager as active on the Web as she is insecure about the world and her own body.
In this long summer grandmother and granddaughter get together after ten years, get to know and recognize each other, while her mother bursts in with anxious phone calls on the landline at home because, as a first gesture, Marilu has commandeered the girl's cell phone. For Adè, the vacation could not begin worse, instead gradually becoming an adventure.
There is a secret her grandmother does not want to talk about, something about her family history, the female line before her-her mother, a pharmacist in a small southern town, and her mother's mother, a healer who ended up living in a convent. An ancient guilt in this guileless story.
On the delicate line between loving, protecting and letting go, between caring and poisoning, the three, from mother to daughter, try to understand each other. Each acted with the best of intentions, although sometimes resentment, pain, and love blind.
Concita De Gregorio weaves three generations, three eras of history and three seasons of life into the voices of Marilù, Angela and Adè: immediately so true, so vulnerable and alive that they resonate immediately intimate.
A medicine is either poison or salvation. Every cure is. Even love: it can suffocate, condemn or liberate. The right measure. The gauge. The doses. How much of how much to administer. When. It's all here
