Cosplayers
A Trump voter who attends all his rallies dressed as the wall on the Mexican border from the famous slogan “build the wall.” Politicians who dress up as superheroes or copy the style of their predecessors. Disillusioned young people who play at staging the murders of politicians, economists who role-play as medieval pirates, activists who fight for the independence of imaginary countries... When what exists does not work but there seems to be no alternative, politics returns in the form of cosplay: a game of masks and disguises in which an illusory past is plundered to hide the fact that everything is always the same, in a chaos of meaningless symbols. Perfect for appeasing rebellions, mobilizing the masses, and going viral on social media, cosplay is the form of politics in the 21st century. Ranging from Internet culture to international current affairs and the philosophy of history, Mattia Salvia formulates the enigma of our time, in which politics seems to be everywhere and nowhere.
