Our Loneliness
How can we live in today's world? In this world. How can we find a way, a place that suits us, knowing that we are privileged but also having to deal with our own traumas, big and small, as well as the enormous traumas of those who are under bombardment, oppressed, poor, disadvantaged? We are ashamed to say that we feel alone, but we are increasingly so. Daria Bignardi says this with sincerity, irony, and courage. She feels that loneliness can be a prison but also a place from which to listen to the heartbeat of the world. The world calls her and she leaves. She goes to the West Bank, to Hebron, to talk to the Palestinian prisoners released in the latest exchange. In At-Tuwani, the village of No Other Land, she meets the international volunteers who accompany children to school every day so that the settlers don't shoot at them. She is in Jerusalem, in the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, on the day Pope Francis dies. She goes to Vietnam, the only country to have defeated the United States, where she discovers how polluted the Mekong River is. She witnesses heart surgery on a newborn baby in Uganda. She wants to leave social media because she senses that there is something there that maliciously exploits our loneliness, but she cannot give up her daily game of Wordle with her nieces, messing around with her friends, flirting with her lovers. She bites into loneliness with passion. She understands what she is looking for in the gaze of a gorilla she meets in Uganda and all the animals she encounters on her journey: the dogs Giulio, Fix, Brillo, the cats, the chickens, a parrot. Despite recounting the oppressions of our present—globalization, occupation, war, patriarchy—this is an intimate and highly personal book, full of happy torment, which manages to do what literature is supposed to do: give words to something we cannot see but feel
