The devil in the pocket

A twelve-year-old girl participates in a challenge launched on social media, goes to school with a water bottle full of vodka and ends up in an ethyl coma. A child, while scrolling through TikTok, stumbles upon a game involving taking as many paracetamol tablets as possible and ends up in the hospital. An elementary school teacher dies in a car accident caused by the driver of the bus she was traveling on: the man, instead of looking at the road, was typing on his cell phone. Through stories like these, at times shocking, Carlo Verdelli recounts a revolution, the one of cell phones and their apps, which is profoundly changing both adolescents and adults. And of which dangerous enormity – even due to the interference of technology in politics– no one seems to want to deal with.

«The reality is that the cell phone understood as a smartphone is a prison without bars and we are in it. Becoming aware that the problem exists is already a good starting point».
